If you find yourself in a Barnes & Noble soon, make your way to the magazine area, pick up a copy of Oh Reader, and turn to page 5. I sent a letter to their “Words from Readers” section and won the “Letter of the Season”! As the winner, I got to choose any book from their catalog. Awesome!
This issue is on the shelf until the end of February. For a reader, as well as a writer, this publication is fun, thought-provoking, informative., and a great boon to the reading community.
Here’s what I wrote:
I’m shouting out a heartfelt “Yes!” to the article in Issue 009, written by Matilda Nevin, titled “Making New Myths: Retelling Classical Literature for Contemporary Times.” Like Nevin, I, too, noticed the power of retelling myths and story from a feminine viewpoint. The written account of the world’s history came to us through centuries of enforced feminine silence. While it’s no secret that women’s stories and their perspectives of historical events were related by men (if told or written at all), the impact of this lack of voice is still pervasive in our lives today. Healing of this deep wound certainly must include retelling myths, legends, stories, and history from the vantage point of those who have by and large been stripped of their voice. As Hilary Mantel stated, “The past is not dead ground, and to traverse it is not a sterile exercise. History is always changing behind us, and the past changes a little every time we retell it.”
