Here’s another in my Still On The Shelf series, where I tell you, book by blessed book, why I periodically run a dust rag across them, pull them off the shelf, and open them up to read.

A lifetime of reading has left me with a sizable number of books. Throughout the years I’ve donated them for tax deductions and traded them for credit by the carload. But for all the trimming and weeding my collection has undergone these past decades, the ones remaining on the shelves are there for a reason: they’ve withstood the test of time. Although I’m more inclined to pick up my Kindle these days, there are still plenty of books on my shelves, and this is one of them.

Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites: Flavorful Recipes for Healthful Meals
by The Moosewood Collective
Clarkson Potter/Publishers, 1996

Just like The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet (you can read that post here), this book doesn’t sit on my regular bookshelves. It’s with my other cookbooks in my walk-in pantry, within easy reach when I’m struck by the cooking bug, which isn’t often.

Still…

Throughout the years I’ve taken a crack at many of the recipes — from appetizers to desserts.

Among the favorites I visit again and again:

Mushroom Polenta

Dark Chocolate Pudding (a hit at the potlucks I’ve taken it to)

Corn Relish

Three Sisters Stew

Carrot Orange Salad

Egg Salad (yes, lower fat egg salad!)

Oven “Fries” (with a variation for Sweet Potato “Fries”)

Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Shepherd’s Pie

Asian Tofu Salad

And On and On

Many recipes contain special notes and tips, with suggestions for variations. Each recipe lists calories, protein, fat, carbs, etc. per serving, as well as menu suggestions.

The intro to each recipe is chatty and informative, and I especially enjoyed reading the intro for each section for an overview of things to come.

I’ve been cooking from this for decades and hopefully for more decades to come.

Which recipe to try next?

Hmmm. Well, since it’s soup season, I think I’ll try the Almost Fat-Free Cornbread. I can already smell it baking.

And that’s why my copy of Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites is Still On The Shelf.

If you liked what you’ve read, please click about 50 times (no kidding) on the applauding hands sign on the left and consider subscribing to receive my posts directly in your email.

And if you really liked it, share it and tell your friends.

And if you really, really liked it, you might want to check out my ebook, The Grapes of Dementia: My Journey of Love, Loss, Surrender, and Gratitude, available worldwide through Amazon.

I designed the cover, Donna Clement took the photo, and Luis H. Ruiz chose the font colors and sizes and placed the text where I told him to. I’m bossy that way.
